The Lake Christine fire is getting bigger in a pretty populated area near Aspen, CO. No structures lost at this time.

Kinja'd!!!

The conditions here are explosively dry and 2 genius folks exercising their 2nd Amendment rights with tracer bullets start this. I hate stupid people.

Give those jackasses a shovel and make them work to put it out.

they were charged with misdemeanor arson, and might be financially on the hook for firefighting costs, already over $1million. Personally, i would rather somebody knock some sense into their skulls with a shovel.

I was a fireman in Colorado for ten years back in the day, worked the Hayman and High Meadow fires before I realized that wildland firefighting was for the kooks.  WAAAYYYYY  more dangerous than fighting a fire in a structure, since you can’t outrun a forest fire but you can usually jump out a window...  People are so stupid.  I’m a complete and total gun nut, and these jackasses should have their guns taken away.

i live on the flanks of Storm King Mtn in Glenwood and tomorrow is the 24th anniversary of the 14 wildland firefighters who died there that day fighting fire. My blood pressure goes up every hot afternoon when thunderstorms roll up the valley.

Not sure about Colorado, but in California DOJ does in fact use prisoners as wildland firefighters. They’re primarily just cutting lines with hand tools, but with arson being considered a “capital offense”, I’m not sure they would be eligible to pull such duties.

Storm King brought massive changes to the way we fight forest fires, huge changes to command and control structures, equipment deployment, weather watching, communications, etc.  Unfortunately, those lessons and the methodology that came with them are still sometimes ignored or botched and we end up with multiple fatality burnovers like the Granite Mountain Hotshots a few years back here in Arizona.  Super sad.

By the way, Glenwood Springs is one of my favorite places in Colorado...

I love Glenwood. I hope they make some progress on that one soon.

We have a local correctional facility that has teams of inmates here as wildfire crews. It is actually a prime work detail if selected.

I’ve heard mixed feelings from the work-release fire teams here in California. On the one hand, you are out of a pen and in the woods for extended periods of time, and it looks great towards helping secure an early release for good behavior . Beyond that, it’s something you can put on a resume if you want to pursue the work full time once you’re a free person.

But on the other hand, it’s brutal work for essentially no money. A lot of people who think it’s an easy ticket out get rejected and have to return to other duties or back to their correctional facility.

Stay safe up there. Hope it gets put out soon.

My best friend from high school and his husband had to evacuate from their property near Evergreen because of a fire in that area. Sounds like that one is nearly contained, and they may only have damage to some trees and not the house.
